Job Description

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Altera Recruitment Group is supporting an innovative energy transition technology business in the South West in the appointment of a Senior Mechanical Engineer.

The business develops renewable energy technology built around high pressure process equipment, and is moving from prototype and pilot work towards commercial deployment. It is a small, committed team where sound engineering judgement and practical delivery matter, with design, fabrication and testing working closely together on site.

This Senior Mechanical Engineer role would suit an experienced engineer with a strong pressure vessel background who wants genuine technical ownership, a hands on mix of design office and workshop, and the chance to shape a technology as it scales.

Key Responsibilities of the Senior Mechanical Engineer

  • Act as the mechanical technical authority, owning the design basis and standards, and reviewing and approving calculations, drawings and specifications before release.
  • Lead the design and integrity assessment of pressure vessels and high pressure systems, including closures, bolted joints, seals and supports.
  • Carry out hands on CAD, calculations, FEA and CFD using SolidWorks, ANSYS or equivalent tools.
  • Manage requirements, interfaces, design reviews, verification and engineering change control from concept through to commissioning.
  • Work with the fabrication team and coded welders on manufacturable designs, inspection, NDT and pressure testing requirements.
  • Provide mechanical oversight through build, assembly, testing and commissioning, including inspection and test plans.
  • Line manage and mentor a Mechanical Design Engineer, developing their calculation, design and problem solving skills.

Candidate Requirements

  • At least 10 years of mechanical engineering experience, with substantial direct experience of high pressure vessels and systems.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent technical qualifications backed by substantial relevant experience.
  • A proven record as a mechanical technical lead or Technical Authority, approving calculations, designs and engineering deliverables.
  • Strong working knowledge of pressure equipment design codes and regulations, including PED and ASME Section VIII.
  • Hands on SolidWorks and engineering analysis experience, including FEA and CFD.
  • Experience taking equipment from detailed design through fabrication, testing and commissioning, ideally including prototype or development equipment.
  • Chartered Engineer status, pilot plant or first of a kind experience, and a background in hydrogen, renewable gases or process plant would be advantageous.

What is on Offer

  • Salary of £70,000 to £85,000 per annum, depending on experience.
  • Full time and site based, with flexible working hours.
  • Share options, giving you a stake in the long term success of the business.
  • 33 days annual leave including bank holidays.
  • Company pension scheme with a 5% contribution.
  • Private health insurance and life assurance.
  • Salary sacrifice electric vehicle scheme.
  • Training and development to support your career growth, plus company team building days.

If you are a Senior Mechanical Engineer with deep pressure vessel experience looking for real technical ownership in a growing business, please apply with your most up to date CV.
